🚗 Getting There

The drive from Maylands (Perth) to Albany covers approximately 410 kilometers and takes about 4.5 hours via the Albany Highway. The journey takes you through the picturesque Darling Range, past the farming communities of Williams and Kojonup, and finally into the rolling hills of the Great Southern region. For those preferring to fly, direct flights from Perth take just over 1 hour.

⛏️ Brief History

of Albany

Albany is Western Australia’s oldest settlement, predating Perth by over two years. Established as a military outpost in 1826 under Major Edmund Lockyer, the settlement served as a strategic port and coaling station for ships traveling between Europe and the eastern colonies. The natural harbor of King George Sound provided safe anchorage that had been noted by explorers since 1791.

The town grew as a center for the whaling industry throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The last whaling station closed in 1978, and today the Historic Whaling Station at Frenchman Bay is one of Albany’s most popular attractions. During both World Wars, Albany played a significant role as a departure point for ANZAC troops heading to Europe.

Albany offers a unique blend of natural beauty and colonial history. Expect dramatic coastal scenery with rugged granite cliffs, pristine beaches, and wildflowers (in season). The town itself features beautifully preserved heritage buildings from the 1800s, excellent seafood restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere. Weather can be unpredictable – Albany is known as one of the windiest cities in Australia, so bring layers!
