🚙 Our Trip: First Impressions

[Magda’s first impressions of Pemberton and Bridgetown will go here… The towering karri forests? The historic steam trains? The winding Blackwood River? The wineries?]

⛏️ A Brief History of Pemberton & Bridgetown

Pemberton began as a timber town in the early 1900s, with logging of the massive karri trees driving the local economy. The Pemberton Railway, opened in 1911, transported timber to the coast for export. Today, the historic steam train is a popular tourist attraction, carrying visitors through the magnificent karri forest that once fed the timber mills.

Bridgetown, founded in 1868, is one of the oldest settlements in the South West. Named after the bridge that crosses the Blackwood River, the town developed as an agricultural center. The historic town center still features many buildings from the 19th century, and the area is now renowned for its wineries, orchards, and as the home of the Blackwood River Valley.

🗺️ What to Expect

Expect towering karri forests, rolling farmland, winding rivers, and a relaxed country atmosphere. Pemberton is famous for its ancient forests, including the Gloucester Tree and Diamond Tree fire lookouts – massive karri trees with metal pegs spiraling to platforms high in the canopy. Bridgetown offers historic charm, beautiful river scenery, and increasingly, boutique wineries and gourmet food experiences.
