🚗 Getting There: The Journey from Perth

The drive from Maylands (Perth) to Cape Leeuwin covers approximately 320 kilometers and takes about 3.5 hours via the Forrest Highway and Bussell Highway to Augusta. The final stretch from Augusta to Cape Leeuwin is a scenic 10-kilometer drive along the coast. Alternatively, you can drive through the beautiful Blackwood River Valley via Bridgetown and Nannup for a more scenic route that adds about an hour to the journey.

⛏️ A Brief History of Cape Leeuwin

Cape Leeuwin is the most south-westerly point of the Australian continent, named after the Dutch ship Leeuwin (“Lioness”) which sighted the coast in 1622. For centuries, this treacherous stretch of coastline claimed many ships, earning the name “the Cape of Storms.” The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was constructed in 1895 from local stone to warn mariners of the dangerous reefs.

At Cape Leeuwin, the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean, creating a natural boundary between these two great bodies of water. The lighthouse remains operational today and stands as a testament to 19th-century engineering. The cape has been the site of many maritime adventures and disasters, and the local museum tells stories of shipwrecks, early explorers, and the hardy souls who built and maintained this remote lighthouse.
