Brisbane – Queensland’s riverside capital
Getting There: Flying from Perth
Unlike our Western Australian road trips, reaching Brisbane requires a flight. From Perth, it’s approximately 4,400 km across the continent – a 4.5 to 5-hour direct flight. We flew with Qantas, departing from Perth Airport in the morning and touching down at Brisbane Airport by early afternoon, ready to explore the Sunshine State’s capital.
Our Trip
[Magda’s impressions of Brisbane will be added here – what made this Queensland capital special, the river walks, the unexpected discoveries, and the memories that stayed with us.]
A Brief History
Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city and the capital of Queensland. Founded in 1824 as a penal colony for reoffenders from Sydney, it grew into a bustling river port. Today it’s known as a vibrant, subtropical city with a relaxed outdoor lifestyle, framed by the winding Brisbane River and surrounded by hills.
The city transformed dramatically in the 1980s with World Expo 88, and has continued evolving with major redevelopment along the South Bank, now a cultural precinct with parks, restaurants, and the famous Wheel of Brisbane.
What to Expect
Brisbane offers a blend of urban sophistication and subtropical ease. The climate is warm and humid, especially in summer. The city center is compact and walkable, with excellent public transport via ferries (the CityCats) that cruise the river. Expect outdoor dining, beautiful botanic gardens, and a youthful energy from the large student population.
